Executive Communications Manager
We are looking for an Executive Communications Manager to join the Integrated Communications team within our Marketing Division. In this role, the Executive Communications Manager will work directly with athenahealth’s highest-ranking executives, including our CEO, responsible for building foundational and durable thought leadership platforms that align with key strategic corporate, innovation, customer, and policy narratives. You will work individually and cross-functionally to translate key public announcements, proprietary research, and industry trends into unique and differentiated perspectives for athenahealth executives. Working across both our internal and external communications teams as well as the broader marketing division, the Executive Communications Manager will be able to operate independently, source supporting proof points, and leverage technology to quickly produce high-quality written content for our executive team. As an experienced communicator and exceptional writer, the Executive Communications Manager will serve as strategist, tactician, and executor, building specific plans while maintaining the flexibility and agility to respond quickly to emergent opportunities. You will be comfortable interacting with seasoned executives, incorporating direct feedback and comfortable preparing stakeholders across a range of media and platforms. You maintain fidelity to deadlines with attention to key detail and are comfortable operating in a fast-moving and ever-changing environment.
Job Responsibilities
Work directly with athenahealth executives to translate key corporate, product, and customer narratives into writing for a variety of audience while maintaining the distinct voice and tone of various executives.
Build and manage executive thought leadership profiles, with editorial calendars and target outlets and platform, while working closely with key stakeholders across communications and marketing to amplify executive voices at key moments throughout the year.
Quickly produce high-quality writing, with the flexibility to incorporate direct feedback and turn drafts around quickly for executive review and approval.
Write and edit a variety of communications, including op-eds, blog posts, executive social media, presentations, and talking points for key public engagements.
Work collaboratively with designers to incorporate visual elements into written material across platforms.
Develop rapport with key executives in order to effectively pitch ideas, including with backup research and supporting points from internal and external sources.
Move seamlessly between the “big picture” and tactical details.
Drive alignment among key stakeholders and effectively manages against deadlines.
Builds and manages relationships with senior leadership team, partnering closely with Marketing Leadership, Chief of Staff, and athenahealth’s Executive Leadership Team (ELT)
Typical Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, creative writing, communications, or related field; experience writing for healthcare companies a bonus.
4+ years of direct experience in an external or corporate communications role/function developing strategies and executing tactics, including but not limited to authoring pieces under executive bylines, preparing executives for external engagements, and delivering on creative strategies under tight deadlines.
2+ years interfacing, influencing, and partnering with senior-level stakeholders and serving as a communications consultant.
Experience making data-based decisions for communications strategies, and where necessary, directly sourcing supporting research to support an executive point of view.
Expert level writing and editing skills.
Demonstrated expertise in one or more of the following areas: organizational storytelling, executive communications, Crisis Communication, or Change Management.
Demonstrated ability to take independent actions and decisions to move projects forward.
Skilled at the art of non-programmed decision making.
Thrives when faced with challenges that have high levels of ambiguity.
Experienced with leveraging technology to scale impact and produce significant amounts of high-level content quickly.
