Pharmacists Mutual Insurance has an opening for an Accountant. This role performs routine accounting functions along with financial and tax reporting duties within the finance department.
Accountant I
- Responsible for basic accounting/finance duties.
- Manages small to medium level accounting functions with direction and assistance, as needed.
Accountant II
- Responsible for moderately complex accounting/finance duties.
- Manages medium to large level accounting functions with direction and assistance, as needed.
Essential Functions
Essential functions may include, but are not limited to the following:
- Processes investment receipts, purchases and sales.
- Reconciles bank statements to general ledger.
- Records monthly general ledger entries and correcting/adjusting entries as required.
- Prepares monthly financial statements.
- Prepares quarterly and annual statement reports for regulators.
- Completes and files regulatory and management reports as requested.
- Provides requested documentation to actuaries and auditors.
- Completes and files state and municipal premium tax returns as required.
- Completes and files federal and state income tax returns as required.
- Completes reinsurance billings with brokers as necessary.
- Completes reinsurance renewals annually.
- Performs system to general ledger balancing on various general ledger accounts monthly.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Thorough knowledge of general accounting principles and practices and knowledge of Statutory Accounting Principles.
- Knowledge of processes and procedures related to accounts receivable, accounts payable, general ledger and financial reporting.
- Knowledge of accounting rules and regulations and the policies and procedures of the finance department.
- Reviews financial documents for completeness and accuracy.
- Performs detail work requiring a high degree of accuracy.
- Makes computations and prepares data summaries.
- Analyzes issues from the perspective of the accounting profession.
- Analyzes complex issues and makes critical decisions.
- Interprets, applies and explains applicable laws, codes and regulations.
- Uses initiative and applies innovative thinking.
- Ability to organize and prioritize work.
- Correct English usage, spelling, grammar, vocabulary and punctuation.
- Establishes and maintains effective working relationships in a team environment through written and oral communication.
- Works independently to make critical decisions and analyze complex issues.
- Contributes effectively to the accomplishment of all goals and objectives.
- Obtains and utilizes sensitive information discreetly and objectively.
- Maintains records, prepares reports and conducts correspondence related to the work.
- Skilled in using and maintaining financial software; learns and uses ad hoc reporting systems to query and report on data; and effectively prepares and uses complex Excel spreadsheets.
Experience and Education Qualifications
Accountant I
- High School Diploma or equivalent and 5 years of related experience; or
- Associate’s Degree or equivalent and 3 years of related experience; or
- Bachelor’s Degree
Accountant II
- High School Diploma or equivalent and 7 years of related experience; or
- Associate’s Degree or equivalent and 5 years of related experience; or
- Bachelor’s Degree and 3 years of related experience; or
- Master’s Degree
Preferred Qualifications
Professional accounting designation or high-level insurance designation (CPA, CIA, CMA, CPCU, AIAF or equivalent)
