Job Summary And Qualifications
The
Associate Vice President (AVP), Pharmacy Clinical Services is responsible for establishing and leading the enterprise strategic direction for clinical pharmacy services.
- Reporting to the Chief Pharmacy Officer, the AVP provides executive leadership for the development, standardization, implementation, measurement, and continuous advancement of clinical pharmacy practice across the organization.
- Establishes an integrated clinical pharmacy strategy that promotes safe, evidence-based, efficient, and patient-centered medication use while reducing unwarranted variation in practice.
- Partners with pharmacy, medical, nursing, patient safety, quality, informatics, technology, and operational leaders to ensure alignment of clinical pharmacy services with patient safety, centralized order entry, MEDITECH Expanse acceleration and optimization, medication alignment, pharmacy operations, and other pharmacy transformation priorities.
- Provides leadership for the Director of Clinical Services, Division Directors of Clinical Pharmacy, Director of Medication Alignment, and Clinical Specialists and establishes the governance, standards, performance expectations, and measurement framework needed to advance a consistent and scalable clinical pharmacy model.
Major Responsibilities:
- Develops and leads the enterprise strategy, vision, and multi-year roadmap for clinical pharmacy services in alignment with the Chief Pharmacy Officer and organizational priorities.
- Establishes enterprise clinical pharmacy practice standards, models, policies, and expectations to reduce unwarranted variation while supporting appropriate local adaptation.
- Establishes and leads clinical pharmacy governance for evaluating practices, prioritizing initiatives, approving standards, measuring adoption, and driving accountability.
- Partners with patient safety, quality, pharmacy operations, medical staff, nursing, and other stakeholders to identify medication-related risks and implement standardized safety strategies.
- Provides clinical leadership for centralized pharmacy order entry and related workflows to support medication safety, clinical effectiveness, standardization, and operational efficiency.
- Provides senior pharmacy clinical leadership for MEDITECH Expanse acceleration, adoption, and optimization, including medication workflows, clinical decision support, order sets, and pharmacist workflows.
- Provides executive oversight for medication alignment initiatives to promote evidence-based medication use, formulary alignment, standardization, and reduction of unnecessary variation.
- Ensures close integration between clinical pharmacy strategy and pharmacy operations so standards are operationally executable, scalable, measurable, and sustainable.
- Leads development and advancement of enterprise clinical pharmacy programs based on evidence, patient needs, regulatory requirements, and opportunities to improve quality, safety, outcomes, and value.
- Establishes clinical pharmacy performance measures, dashboards, and outcome metrics to evaluate effectiveness, adoption, variation, medication safety, operational impact, and value.
- Establishes processes to evaluate emerging evidence, professional guidelines, medication-use trends, and new clinical practices and translate findings into enterprise pharmacy practice.
- Partners with pharmacy informatics, IT, clinical informatics, and operational teams to optimize technology, automation, analytics, and clinical decision support.
- Builds partnerships with physician, nursing, quality, safety, and other clinical leaders to advance medication-use initiatives and integrate pharmacists into interdisciplinary patient care.
- Leads complex enterprise clinical transformation initiatives across corporate, division, and facility teams and establishes accountability for adoption, sustainability, and measurable results.
- Provides leadership, coaching, development, and performance oversight for the Director of Clinical Services, Division Directors of Clinical Pharmacy, Director of Medication Alignment, Clinical Specialists, and other assigned team members.
- Maintains awareness of evolving pharmacy practice standards, accreditation and regulatory requirements, medication safety priorities, technology capabilities, and national health-system pharmacy trends.
- Advises the Chief Pharmacy Officer and senior leaders regarding clinical pharmacy strategy, performance, risks, opportunities, resource requirements, and emerging trends.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
- Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) or Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from an accredited school of pharmacy is required; Advanced degree in pharmacy, healthcare administration, business administration, public health, or a related field is preferred.
- 10+ years of progressive health-system pharmacy experience, including significant clinical pharmacy leadership experience is required.
- 5+ years of leadership experience with responsibility for clinical pharmacy programs, teams, or services is required.
- Demonstrated experience leading clinical pharmacy strategy, practice transformation, and standardization within a large, complex health system or multi-hospital organization is required.
- Demonstrated experience leading interdisciplinary initiatives involving pharmacy, physicians, nursing, patient safety, quality, informatics, and operations is required.
- Ability to travel up to 25% is required.
Licenses, Certifications, & Training:
- Current pharmacist licensure in at least one U.S. state is required
- Eligible to obtain additional licensure as required by organizational responsibilities is required.
- Board certification through the Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS), preferred.
- Completion of an ASHP-accredited pharmacy residency or equivalent health-system pharmacy experience, preferred.
- Advanced leadership or healthcare management training, preferred.
