Position Summary
The ICU Medical Consumables portfolio is focused on vascular access devices for infusion therapy and blood draw. The Research and Development Summer Intern will support test method development, characterization of prototypes, and finalization of design elements for various development projects. This includes hands-on test development and validation, statistical analysis of data and communication of results and recommendations in report and/or presentation formats following Good Documentation Practices (GDP). Working under the supervision of a mentor, the intern will complete assigned projects and deliver a summary presentation at the conclusion of the internship.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Design test fixtures using Solidworks and prototype using 3D printing prior to fabrication
- Author test instructions and collaborate with engineering staff to complete validation using statistical methods
- Develop conceptual mechanical designs and build prototypes to assess feasibility
- Apply analytical and/or statistical methodologies to support design decisions
- Perform investigations and troubleshooting activities as required
- Works on special projects as assigned.
Knowledge & Skills
- Hands-on experience with 3D modeling, 3D printing and mechanical test equipment
- Able to solve technical problems using basic engineering principles and analytical ability while learning the use of effective methodologies
- Able to create technical documentation such as engineering drawings and component specifications with assistance from senior staff
- Able to work accurately with attention to detail
- Able to handle multiple priorities and meet key deadlines through effective time management skills and guidance
- Able to communicate professionally with technical and non-technical internal and external customers through conversations, presentations, and formal and informal electronic media
Minimum Qualifications, Education & Experience
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Minimum of Junior standing pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical or Biomedical Engineering from an accredited college or university is required
- Prior work experience in a professional or laboratory setting preferred
- Prior instruction in SolidWorks CAD or other CAD software preferred
- Prior instruction in Statistics preferred
Work Environment
- This is largely a sedentary role.
- On-site attendance at our Southington, CT facility.
- This job operates in a professional office environment and routinely uses standard office and laboratory equipment.
- Typically requires travel less than 5% of the time.
