The Senior Maintenance & Automation Technician maintains, troubleshoots, repairs and improves automated pharmaceutical manufacturing equipment in a cGMP environment. This role focuses on production equipment reliability, including filling, labeling, inspection, conveying, packaging, and related control systems. The technician also supports cleanroom equipment and systems such as laminar airflow workstations, door interlocks, and environmental monitoring devices. The position works closely with Manufacturing, Engineering, Quality, Facilities, equipment vendors, and service providers to reduce downtime and keep equipment operational, safe, reliable, and compliant. All work is performed in accordance with company procedures, cGMP, and applicable safety and regulatory requirements.

Essential Functions:
This description is intended to be illustrative of the major duties performed by the employee assigned to this position.
- Perform preventive, corrective, and emergency maintenance on manual and automated manufacturing equipment.
- Troubleshoot and repair filling, capping, labeling, inspection, conveying, packaging and related production equipment.
- Diagnose mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, vacuum, hydraulic, instrumentation and control-system issues using schematics, manuals, PLC/HMI systems, alarms and diagnostic tools.
- Troubleshoot Allen-Bradley/Rockwell/Siemens PLC systems, including I/O, ladder logic, machine sequencing and control components.
- Troubleshoot HMIs, servo systems, VFDs, motors, sensors, encoders, proximity switches, safety circuits and related automation components.
- Able to read and interpret P&ID diagrams and electrical blueprints.
- Repair and maintain pneumatic and vacuum systems, including cylinders, valves, regulators, manifolds and controls.
- Maintain and repair robotics, vision systems, printers, barcode systems, automated labeling and material-handling equipment.
- Perform equipment teardown, repair, rebuild, alignment, adjustment, timing and reassembly.
- Support cleanroom equipment and systems, including laminar airflow workstations, door interlocks, pass-throughs, alarms and differential-pressure monitoring.
- Coordinate specialized HVAC, HEPA, refrigeration, purified-water, cleanroom certification and facility maintenance with internal teams and outside vendors.
- Troubleshoot pressure, temperature, flow, level and other process instrumentation.
- Perform maintenance in classified areas while following gowning, contamination-control and cleanroom requirements.
- Follow GDP standards to accurately document maintenance activities in Blue Mountain (BMRAM) and ensure equipment is properly returned to service.
- Follow change-control requirements for equipment modifications, software changes and component substitutions.
- Support equipment investigations, deviations, CAPAs, root-cause analysis and corrective actions.
- Identify recurring equipment issues and recommend reliability improvements, PM changes, spare parts and equipment upgrades.
- Identify critical spare-parts inventory and work with OEMs and vendors on technical support and replacement parts.
- Assist with equipment installation, commissioning, qualification and startup.
- Develop and update PM procedures, work instructions and troubleshooting guides.
- Respond to production downtime with appropriate urgency while maintaining safety, quality and compliance.
- Follow Lockout/Tagout, electrical safety and site EH&S requirements.
- Assist with the training of technicians, as needed.
- Acknowledge and investigate.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
EXPERIENCE AND NECESSARY COMPETENCIES:
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Technical school, apprenticeship, or Associate degree in industrial maintenance, mechatronics, electronics, automation or a related technical field preferred. Equivalent hands-on experience will be considered.
- Five or more years of hands-on industrial maintenance, equipment maintenance, field service, automation, or related manufacturing experience preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to independently troubleshoot complex electromechanical production equipment.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and experience using hand tools, power tools, precision measuring instruments and electrical diagnostic equipment.
- Demonstrated electrical troubleshooting ability, including reading electrical schematics and safely using diagnostic equipment.
- Experience troubleshooting PLC-controlled automated manufacturing equipment.
- Experience with VFDs, servo drives, motors and industrial motor-control systems.
- Experience troubleshooting pneumatic systems.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, ladder diagrams mechanical drawings, schematics, equipment manuals and technical documentation.
- Strong problem-solving and root-cause troubleshooting skills.
- Strong organizational and documentation skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a cross-functional team.
- Understanding of 503B regulatory requirements, cGMP standards, and USP guidelines is a plus!
- Proficient written, verbal and oral English communication skills are required.
- Proficiency with Microsoft 365 tools including Outlook, Microsoft, and Excel.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand, stoop, bend, climb or sit for extended periods of time.
- Ability to work in small compartments at floor level.
- Ability to lift, push and pull up to 50 pounds periodically.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a sterile gowning qualification.
