Job Summary
The Tax Accountant supports federal, state, and local tax compliance activities under the guidance of senior team members and external tax advisors. This entry-level role gathers and organizes financial information, prepares routine tax workpapers and filings, processes tax payments, maintains tax records and calendars, and assists with tax notices and related accounting tasks.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Gather, organize, and reconcile financial information needed for federal, state, and local tax compliance.
- Assist senior team members and external tax advisors with preparation of income, franchise, property, sales and use, and other tax filings.
- Prepare routine tax workpapers, schedules, account reconciliations, and supporting documentation using established procedures.
- Assist with calculations and documentation for estimated and extension tax payments.
- Process approved tax payments and maintain accurate payment records.
- Maintain tax calendars, due-date trackers, files, and electronic documentation.
- Research routine tax questions and summarize findings for review by senior team members.
- Assist with responses to tax notices by gathering support, drafting routine correspondence, and tracking resolution.
- Communicate professionally with internal partners, external tax advisors, and taxing authorities as directed.
- Support tax-related accounting activities, audits, and process improvements as assigned.
- Maintain current knowledge of relevant tax and accounting practices through training and professional development.
Qualifications
KNOWLEDGE & REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field
- 1-2 years of professional accounting or tax experience
- Foundational knowledge of accounting principles and an interest in corporate taxation
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including basic formulas, sorting, filtering, and data organization
- Strong attention to detail, organization, and ability to meet deadlines
- Clear written and verbal communication skills and willingness to learn
- Experience with NetSuite or tax preparation software is helpful but not required
