Role Summary
Join athenahealth as a Lead Frontend Software Engineer! This role is a hybrid role based in Austin, TX, that combines remote and on-site collaboration. This role offers the opportunity to contribute to the development of next-generation EMR scheduling and practice management software that improves healthcare experiences for providers and patients. You’ll lead front end development for Scheduling, partnering across product, design, backend, and other engineering pods. You’ll set the technical direction and standards that help the team consistently deliver a high-quality, accessible, high-performance scheduling experience. You are an excellent communicator and nimble learner who embraces the challenges and complexity of working in the healthcare space. This role reports to an Engineering Manager and plays a key role in advancing our software solutions.
Team Summary
We are building the next generation of EMR scheduling and practice management software designed to streamline and enhance the accuracy of scheduling processes for healthcare providers and their patients. This team is focused on creating software that directly impacts millions of patients by improving their healthcare experience. As a member of this team, you will write code that continuously refines and elevates these experiences, ensuring that the solutions are reliable, scalable, and user-friendly. Your job is to develop and support frontends backed by highly performant and scalable APIs. We aspire to use all the usual industry best practices such as continuous delivery and iterative agile methodologies. We do two-week sprints and rollout our features quickly to a subset of our customers for feedback as they mature. Your work will contribute to meaningful improvements in healthcare delivery and patient outcomes, making a tangible difference in the lives of real people.
Essential Job Responsibilities
Hands-on technical leadership across React + TypeScript: UI architecture, component strategy, and implementation standards
Lead a Scheduling front end team (~5–8 engineers) and provide technical leadership through coaching and feedback
Lead GraphQL data integration in the browser using Apollo, ensuring strong UX during loading and error states.
Maintain frontend engineering standards: coding quality, maintainability, and review rigor
Improve front end performance for complex, data-dense screens
Ensure accessibility through semantic HTML and keyboard/screen reader-friendly patterns
Establish responsible AI guardrails for AI-enabled development, including anticipating likely pitfalls and mitigation plans
Additional Job Responsibilities
Collaborate with Product and Design to deliver effective, accessible user experiences.
Partner with backend and platform teams to ensure stable UI/API integration and predictable behavior across releases.
Help drive engineering readiness through technical planning and validation across pods.
Experience with design systems and scalable component libraries.
Experience with client-side observability (error monitoring and/or performance instrumentation).
Experience leading medium-to-large initiatives end-to-end in a product setting
Experience in healthcare or similarly regulated environments preferred.
Expected Education & Experience
8+ years of software engineering experience, with significant product development expertise
3+ years of experience leading cloud-hosted SaaS products
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.
Extensive web application development experience on the Frontend (e.g., MicroUI architecture, responsive designs)
Proficient with the JavaScript/Typescript and React framework (including concepts like hooks, contexts, refs, etc.)
Experience leveraging AI-assisted development tools throughout full SDLC (Required)
Ability to lead teams/technical projects including technical design, scoping and estimation
Expected Compensation
$136,000 - $232,000
The base salary range shown reflects the full range for this role from minimum to maximum. At athenahealth, base pay depends on multiple factors, including job-related experience, relevant knowledge and skills, how your qualifications compare to others in similar roles, and geographical market rates. Base pay is only one part of our competitive Total Rewards package - depending on role eligibility, we offer both short and long-term incentives by way of an annual discretionary bonus plan, variable compensation plan, and equity plans.
