Responsibilities
Responsible for achieving business, financial, and operational goals and performance metrics for one or more outpatient pharmacy locations.
Provides overall leadership and direction for outpatient pharmacy operations, including medication procurement, dispensing, staffing, and service delivery.
Ensures prescribed medications are verified and dispensed in accordance with professional standards, organizational policies, and all applicable state and federal laws and regulations.
Leads outpatient pharmacy business development initiatives, including prescription volume growth, service line expansion, payer strategy, and clinic integration.
Oversees P&L performance for the outpatient pharmacy, including revenue optimization, cost control, inventory management, and margin improvement initiatives.
Develops and executes 340B program growth strategies, including optimization of eligible patient capture, audit readiness, compliant replenishment, and alignment with organizational financial goals.
Maintains and updates the outpatient pharmacy formulary, clinical service offerings, and therapeutic interchange practices, as applicable.
Maintains the Pharmacy Quality Improvement Program, including defined metrics, continuous improvement initiatives, and regulatory compliance monitoring.
Maintains compliance with all applicable accreditation, regulatory, and licensure requirements for outpatient pharmacy operations.
Develops, maintains, and enforces all outpatient Pharmacy Operational and Clinical Policies and Procedures.
Responsible for clinical decision-making aspects of specialty or limited-distribution pharmacy programs, when applicable in the outpatient setting.
Ensures qualified pharmacists and pharmacy staff are accountable for clinical and operational decisions affecting patients.
Provides guidance and oversight for clinical and operational workflows supporting specialty medications, prior authorizations, patient education, and adherence initiatives, when applicable.
Consults with patients, as needed, regarding medications or supplies prescribed, including dosage, administration, storage, potential side effects, and drug interactions.
Works directly with patients to address questions or concerns regarding their prescriptions, insurance coverage, or pharmacy services.
Reviews and ensures the accuracy and integrity of patient profiles, records, and documentation to comply with all applicable regulations.
Manages all associate relations functions for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians, including hiring, performance management, corrective action, and termination.
Monitors staff performance to ensure compliance with policies, procedures, workflow standards, and approved dispensing practices.
Maintains established procedures concerning quality assurance, controlled substance security, recordkeeping, and diversion prevention.
Makes recommendations and implements improvements to operating procedures to enhance workflow efficiency, patient experience, and financial performance.
Responds to escalated patient, provider, or operational issues requiring director-level intervention.
Provides consultative support to leadership, providers, and staff on outpatient pharmacy operations and medication-related matters.
Reviews daily, weekly, and monthly staffing schedules and labor utilization, including management of PTO, sick time, holidays, and coverage.
Leads department meetings, staff education, and in-service training for pharmacy staff and applicable clinic personnel.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) from an accredited College of Pharmacy.
Current, unrestricted pharmacist license in the applicable state(s).
Minimum of 2+ years of progressively responsible pharmacy experience, including at least one (1) year in a supervisory or management role.
Demonstrated experience in outpatient or community pharmacy operations strongly preferred.
Experience with financial management, 340B programs, or specialty pharmacy services is highly preferred.
Advanced degree, pharmacy residency, or equivalent leadership experience preferred but not required.
Skills and Knowledge
Strong leadership and people management skills.
Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with patients, providers, staff, and executives.
Strong business acumen, including P&L ownership, budgeting, and financial analysis.
Knowledge of outpatient pharmacy workflows, third-party billing, reimbursement, and revenue cycle operations.
Experience with 340B compliance, auditing concepts, and growth strategies.
Strong decision-making and problem-solving skills.
Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced outpatient environment.
High level of organizational skill and attention to detail.
Customer-focused mindset with the ability to resolve issues creatively and efficiently.
Familiarity with pharmacy management systems, dispensing software, and automated dispensing technologies used in outpatient settings.
