Brief Job Overview
This is a senior scientific leadership role to support the advancement and transformation of USP’s compendial science. This role is responsible for ensuring the scientific rigor, consistency, and global relevance of USP standards, science, and policy as new scientific advances, emerging medicine modalities, and evolving manufacturing technologies reshape pharmaceutical development and quality expectations.
Working across scientific, regulatory, and operational teams, the Vice President leads science quality strategies aligned with USP’s Science Quality Framework, supports readiness for digital transformation and modern pharmaceutical trends, and advances pharmacopeial collaboration and harmonization. The role also strengthens USP’s scientific voice through effective knowledge dissemination and stakeholder engagement, reinforcing USP’s position as a trusted global authority in compendial science and policy.

The Vice President, Compendial Science Transformation has the following responsibilities:
- Provide senior scientific leadership for the development, application, and evolution of compendial science, ensuring high scientific rigor and quality across standards.
- Lead science quality strategies aligned with USP’s Mission, and Science Quality Framework, ensuring transparency, consistency, and scientific defensibility.
- Drive scientific readiness for pharmacopeial support of industry's digital transformation and emerging science & technologies by aligning compendial standards with modern pharmaceutical trends, including advanced manufacturing, data driven approaches to quality, and automated risk-based decision-making strategies.
- Advance pharmacopeial collaboration and pharmaceutical harmonization, including establishing a strategic engagement approach with international partners and regulatory stakeholders to further compendial science and compendial policy.
- Partner with Regulatory Affairs and cross-functional teams to anticipate regulatory developments and support effective science–led regulatory engagement to further compendial science and policy.
- Strengthening USP’s scientific voice through knowledge dissemination and stakeholder engagement, supporting understanding and adoption of USP standards.
- Lead and develop scientific teams, including performance management and stewardship of resources.
Who is USP Looking For?
The Successful Candidate Will Have a Demonstrated Understanding Of Our Mission, Commitment To Excellence Through Inclusive And Equitable Behaviors And Practices, Ability To Quickly Build Credibility With Stakeholders, Along With The Following Competencies And Experience
- PhD in Chemistry, Biology, Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Regulatory Science, or a related field with 10+ years of regulatory or industry experience, or MS with 15+ years (or equivalent combination).
- 7+ years of experience in compendial or regulatory science, including development and application of quality standards.
- Broad scientific expertise related to the quality of medicines, dietary supplements, and foods.
- Demonstrated experience leading complex scientific initiatives in a global regulatory and scientific environment.
- Strong understanding of global regulatory and scientific standard setting ecosystems.
- Experience driving and implementing digital transformation within an evolving regulatory environment.
Additional Desired Preferences
- Strong understanding and familiarity with the governance, policies and processes of USP, other pharmacopeias and standard setting organizations.
- Agility to lead and pursue a variety of scientific projects and research.
- Demonstrated stakeholder collaboration experience, with the ability to quickly develop and manage internal and external relationships and contacts.
- Strong organizational, interpersonal communications, negotiation, writing, and strong listening skills.
- Ability and desire to work well with diverse employees and customers in a cooperative and friendly manner.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Yes, this role manages approximately 7-8 staff members.

Compensation
Base Salary Range: USD $270,000.00 – $325,000.00 annually.
Target Annual Bonus: % Varies based on level of role.
Individual compensation packages are based on various factors unique to each candidate’s skill set, experience, qualifications, equity, and other job-related reasons.
