The Role
QuidelOrtho is looking for an
Environment, Health & Safety (E, H & S) Intern that wants to spend their summer working towards our mission: Changing Lives, One Test at a Time. Interns will have the opportunity to gain knowledge and develop their skills all while contributing to key company projects and initiatives. Our team will help students apply their educational background and broaden their knowledge base within their role and learn more about working in the medical device/biotech industry. Interns will work with a mentor(s) on a guided and impactful project and will be able to collaborate with and be part of a supportive and dedicated team.
This Internship is a full-time (40 hours per week) paid program for 10-12 weeks.
Location: San Diego, CA – Carlsbad
Session 1 start: June 15th
Session 2 start: July 6th
Note: This position is unable to support students currently on visa sponsorship.
The Responsibilities
- Supports the site as it relates to site safety reporting, metrics, Gemba walks, and elevating safety to the forefront at all levels of the organization.
- Participates in the investigation of work-related incidents, injuries, near misses, and environmental non-compliances, and the identification of effective corrective actions.
- Supports routine EH&S inspections for compliance with the IIPP and external regulatory authorities (e.g., fire, air, hazardous waste, biological waste, air, wastewater, etc.).
- Supports oversight of hazardous waste and biowaste lab services including outside services, supplies, pickups, and related regulatory paperwork and inspections.
- Creates, updates, and delivers site safety training.
- Assists with the collection and data input of utility usage (e.g., water, electric, gas), waste generation rates for hazardous, biohazardous, clean, and recycled waste, chemical inventories, etc. Supports the compilation of data into reports to review metrics, trends, and where required reporting to external regulatory agencies.
- lead and launch 1-2 safety kaizens that identify opportunities for continuous improvement for Production, Labs, and/or Warehouse areas.
- Help optimize EHS efficiencies by incorporating AI tools and skill set to improve current EHS processes.
- Participate in TOMs and lean activities at sites that focus on improving safety processes.
- Assist in creation, update, and delivery of site safety trainings
- Perform other work-related duties as assigned.
The Individual
Required
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- Must be currently enrolled as a full-time student in a bachelor’s or master’s program in the fall semester 2026 at an accredited university or college.
- Degree in Environmental Science, Environmental or Public Health, Chemistry, Biology, or equivalent required.
- Familiar with applicable federal, state, and local laws pertaining to EH&S matters.
- Working knowledge with Microsoft Office suite programs, Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
- Able to read, comprehend, evaluate, and communicate using hard-copy and digital media.
- Must be self-motivated and able to work independently.
- Minimum GPA 3.0 or higher.
- Able to start on either June 1st or July 6th.
- Ability to complete a consecutive 10-12 week internship.
- Must have work authorization in the United States at the time of hire and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment.
Preferred
- Experience in environmental health and safety field, preferably in medical, biotech, or pharmaceutical industry
- Rising Junior or Senior at an accredited university or college.
The Work Environment
No strenuous physical activity, though occasional light lifting of files and related materials is required. 30% of time in meetings, working with team, or talking on the phone, 70% of the time at the desk on computer, doing analytical work.
Salary Transparency
The salary range for this position takes into account a wide range of factors including education, experience, knowledge, skills, geography, and abilities of the candidate, in addition to internal equity and alignment with market data. The salary range for current Freshman, rising Sophomore is 18.00/hour; Sophomore, rising Junior is 20/hour; Junior, rising senior is $23.00/hour to $26.00/hour; Senior, enrolled in school for fall 2024 is 25.00/hour to 28.00/hour; or currently enrolled Graduate, MBD, PhD program is 28.00/hour to 30.00/hour. At QuidelOrtho, compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case.
