The Role
The Technical Development (Tech Dev) organization at Moderna designs, develops, and advances manufacturing and analytical control strategies for mRNA medicines. Co-ops will join high-performing analytical teams supporting PhysChem and Bioassay testing to enable clinical and commercial manufacturing. You’ll apply your educational background while gaining hands-on experience in analytical method execution, data analysis, and method lifecycle management for mRNA drug substance and drug product. Through this work, you’ll deepen your understanding of how robust analytical methods ensure product quality, stability, and regulatory compliance.
Within Tech Dev, the Analytical Technical Operations team supports the execution and continuous improvement of Physicochemical and Bioassay methods. The team ensures accurate, reliable, and timely analytical results to enable process support, stability studies, technology transfer, and regulatory filings.
Here’s What You’ll Do
- Work with a team of highly skilled experts to build technical knowledge in PhysChem and Bioassay analytical platforms.
- Execute analytical testing methods (e.g., chromatography, electrophoresis, spectroscopy, cell-based assays, potency assays, or other physicochemical and biological assays) following established protocols.
- Use laboratory, technical, and communication skills to generate experimental results, perform data analysis, and document findings in formal reports including conclusions and recommended next steps.
- Support method performance monitoring, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement initiatives to enhance robustness, throughput, and reliability.
- Participate in planning, design, and execution of method optimization studies, including statistical evaluation of assay performance characteristics.
- Assist in investigations related to atypical results, method deviations, or assay variability, contributing to root cause analysis and corrective actions.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with process development, formulation, manufacturing, and quality teams to ensure analytical methods meet program needs.
- Contribute to preparation of technical documentation to support regulatory filings, technology transfer, and inspection readiness.
- Review relevant scientific literature and emerging technologies to identify opportunities for analytical innovation and efficiency improvements.
- Present findings and updates in cross-functional meetings.
- Additional duties as may be assigned from time to time.
Here’s What You’ll Need (Basic Qualifications)
- Current student enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s program in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Biochemical Engineering, Bioengineering, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Biophysics, Statistics, Cell Biology, Immunology, or a related field.
- Strong fundamental scientific skills for evaluation and interpretation of experimental data.
- Laboratory experience applicable to analytical method execution, including experience with physicochemical characterization and/or bioassay techniques.
- At Moderna, we are focused on delivering on our mission by enabling talent to thrive. For this role, we are currently unable to offer immigration sponsorship. Candidates must already hold work authorization in the US and be able to maintain that status without the need for future sponsorship.

- Hands-on experience with analytical techniques such as HPLC/UPLC, CE, UV-Vis, DLS, LC-MS, ELISA, qPCR, and other physicochemical or bioanalytical platforms.
- Experience with cell culture, cell-based potency assays, western blot, SDS-PAGE, and related molecular and immunological techniques.
- Basic understanding of assay performance characteristics (accuracy, precision, specificity, linearity, robustness) and data trending.
- Demonstrated ability to work both independently and contribute effectively to high-performing teams.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- A desire to make an impact as part of a high-growth, transformational company that is Bold, Relentless, Curious, and Collaborative.
