Job Description
Position Summary
The Senior Technical Director provides strategic and technical leadership for analytical laboratory operations and commercial team personnel, ensuring scientific excellence, regulatory compliance, and innovation in testing methodologies and services. This role combines high-level oversight with hands-on technical expertise, supporting day-to-day business operations, complex investigations, and custom projects and services. The position also influences industry standards through active participation in industry-specific organizations and directly supports veterinary pharmaceutical and specialty product development projects for the protein production and companion animal industries.
Authority
The Senior Technical Director receives sufficient authority from, and is accountable to, the Business Unit Manager, and has the authority to take necessary actions to ensure compliance with quality systems and regulatory requirements, identify departures from established procedures, and implement corrective measures consistent with company guidelines and sound technical judgment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Strategic & Technical Leadership
- Develop and implement technical strategies aligned with organizational goals and industry standards.
- Provide subject matter expertise in food and feed testing, veterinary drug and specialty animal product development, and emerging contaminant testing.
- Support veterinary pharmaceutical and specialty product development projects aimed at improving protein production efficiency and safety and companion animal health and longevity.
Laboratory Operations & Technical Support
- Maintain knowledge of all testing capabilities within CUS043, US Food, and other relevant partner and prospect companies outside of the Food division.
- Design and execute experiments for complex projects, including method development, validation, and failure analysis.
- Assist in the operation of advanced analytical instruments (LC-MS/MS, HPLC) and assist chemists with challenging investigations.
- Review and approve analytical data, ensuring accuracy and compliance with regulatory guidelines, as needed.
Quality & Compliance
- Ensure operations and deliverables adhere to ISO, FDA, USDA, international, and other specific applicable regulatory standard requirements.
- Support quality system improvements through CAPA documentation, non-conformance reporting, and internal audits, as needed.
- Edit and review controlled documents related to laboratory operations and testing methodologies.
Industry Engagement & Influence
- Actively participate in industry committees and working groups to support food and feed quality and safety standards.
- Represent the organization in industry forums, webinars, and regulatory discussions.
Operational Excellence
- Performs all tasks safely and efficiently, serving as a role model for ESFA leaders.
- Support process improvement project initiatives to ensure safe, efficient laboratory practices.
- Coordinate purchasing and inventory systems to maintain laboratory supplies and equipment, if needed.
- Maintain regular attendance and punctuality.
- Perform other duties assigned by management to support business objectives.
Qualifications
Basic Minimum Qualifications:
- Advanced degree in Chemistry, Food Science, or related field (M.Sc. or Ph.D. preferred).
- 10+ years of experience in analytical laboratory operations, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership role.
Ability and/or Skills:
- Expertise in LC-MS/MS and other advanced analytical platforms.
- Strong knowledge of regulatory frameworks for food safety, feed standards, and veterinary drug compliance.
- Proven ability to lead large teams and manage complex projects.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
