Pay Range: $120,000 - $145,000
Summary
The Engineering Manager leads the mechanical and electrical designs for packaging automation machinery with strong knowledge of distribution center operations, material handling technology, and warehouse software system technology. This includes knowledge of the entire development process through engineering program and project management, conceptual design, detailed design, prototyping, manufacturing, performance analysis, technical documentation, and configuration management. The Engineering Manager will use independent judgement and technical skills in developing new products and in optimizing existing products to increase sales and profitability.
Essential Duties & Responsibilites
- Provide leadership to engineers and drafter/designers, directing and reviewing their work
- Manage mechanical & electrical engineering projects, including customer specifications and design of mechanical components of the machinery
- Work closely with Sales through application of mechanical engineering knowledge of machinery principles and materials, manufacturing methods and processes to ensure designs are functional, practical, economical and satisfy customer operating requirements.
- Design and test packaging and automation equipment to deliver highest technical & commercial solution, enabling our sales organization to meet the needs and expectations of our customers
- Delegate duties to engineers and designers/drafters as per requirements from production schedule
- Partner with Manufacturing to ensure machinery designs are properly fabricated, parts machined, and assembled, including mechanical design specifications/drawings revisions
- Interface with the Production Department to conduct machinery mechanical testing and with other departments, sale, marketing, parts and purchasing, to coordinate customer projects are on time
- Lead communications with vendors (OEM’s) and contractors to implement “cutting edge” automation solutions
- Provide engineering solutions for continuous improvement objectives using industry standard tools and procedures (Change Control, ROI, etc.)
- Work closely with commercial and operations teams to create functional design concepts, test existing designs, and oversee the implementation of developmental projects
- May spearhead redesign of existing products to reduce cost or improve efficiencies and quality
- Consult with software engineering team to evaluate software-hardware interfaces and develop specifications and performance requirements
Conduct market research and evaluate similar products and their functionsProvide project management support through initiation, planning, execution, monitoring/controlling and closure of projectsSupport the Tension design team on new equipment design efforts, including:
- Concept design to support the hypothesis.
- Refining the design to validate or invalidate the hypothesis.
- Development of a solution that meets all business and operational requirements.
- Capital budget estimation of solution.
- Understanding and supporting concept design project budgets and schedules
- Supporting the development of a wide array of conceptual designs to meet various client requirements, business, and operational requirements.
- Concepts may range from manual to fully automated solutions.
- Documenting and managing project changes with the Client and the Tension Design Team. Preparing reports on design project specifications, activities, or status
- Supporting tools development, continuous improvement, and use of various programs
- Lead Engineering project team resources (Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Controls Engineering) during Integrated Detail Design and Implementation project phases
- Lead final engineering efforts and engineering weekly meetings, publishing weekly engineering status reports (consolidated from electrical engineering, design engineering, and technical services), tracking engineering schedule and budgets, and resource planning (report to engineering directors)
- Design drafting full bill of materials in SolidWorks for new product development projects.
- Redesigning existing products to enhance functionality or reduce costs.
- Creating design projects and specification sheets.
- Presenting product designs to management and stakeholders.
- Overseeing the engineering of product prototypes.
- Testing prototype products for functionality, ease-of-use, and longevity.
- Resolving product issues
- Supporting requirement documentation - business and operational requirements, engineering requirements, and others
- Serve as technical resource for customers and internal Service Technicians to address and resolve inquiries and problems, especially during machine installation and start-up in customer plant(s)
- Participating in associate hiring, performance management and evaluation, and other employee-related activities
- Travel to customer sites, approximately 20%

EDUCATION And EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering
- Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience in industrial equipment design and manufacturing required
- Experience in a made to order type environment focusing on semi-custom machinery
- Proficient with AutoCAD, SolidWorks, MS Navision, PDM, ERP, and MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
