Job Description
JOB SUMMARY:
Assists Pharmacists in various aspects of dispensing, including filling medication orders, pre-packing, filling medication carts, and keeping records. Prepares sterile products under direct supervision of a Pharmacist, including TPNs and chemotherapy.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB:
Distribution Services:
1. Maintains admission/discharge/transfer information; answers telephones and transmits messages and calls; pages/calls pharmacy personnel as necessary.
2. Fills computer generated patient medication labels; delivers medications to nursing units as trained.
3. Fills and delivers stores requisitions requests submitted from other hospital departments; records shorts.
4. Performs simple manufacturing, reconstituting oral antibiotic suspensions; constitutes standard external irrigation solutions; transfers aliquots from bulk packaging to individual patient packages; indicates expiration dates.
5. Performs drug storage inspections in pharmacy areas as assigned monthly; completes records and communicates problems to site coordinator.
6. Pre-packs high use bulk packaged tablets and capsules for unit-dose dispensing and labels.
7. Fills unit-dose drugs in the automated dispensing device (Pyxis); charges and credits patient's computer profile for medication usage.
8. Re-packages emergency medication boxes, code drawers and code boxes, and anesthesia trays; completes patient charges as appropriate.
9. Counts stock; writes sales tickets for Pharmacist's verification; completes sales transaction for approved over-the-counter sale of drugs. Completes patient specific medication fill as appropriate.
10. Performs cycle counts, restocking, expiration date monitoring, and stock maintenance in Med-carousel and packaging equipment.
11. Provides routine monitoring of pharmaceutical and other appropriate stock for expiration date. Will remove/ segregates expired or unused medication from stock.
Admixture Services:
1. Requests sterile product label reprints and batched printing of sterile product labels; collates labels and sterile products profile cards.
2. Makes floor rounds to maintain patient computer profiles and sterile products profile cards; corrects and updates sterile products labels for administration times, transfers, etc.
3. Maintain daily operation departmental records for hood cleaning, pre-filter changes; practices infection control policies and procedures applicable to personnel working in I.V. room in accordance to USP (797).
4. Assembles drugs, solutions, and appropriate materials needed to compound sterile products.
5. Reconstitutes powdered admixtures, aseptically, using diluents and diluents volume according to department and manufacturing standards.
6. Compounds sterile products, including TPNs and chemotherapy; verifies finished products prior to Pharmacists review.
7. Checks final sterile product for clarity, presence of particulate matter, leaks, quality, and integrity prior to pharmacist check.
8. Labels admixtures; indicates expiration date; assembles finished product by patient, order number, and sterile product profile card for Pharmacists verification.
9. Delivers verified sterile product to nursing unit's appropriate delivery system for product type.
10. Initiates patient charges and credits for sterile products and patient chargeable supplies used, as necessary.
General Duties:
1. Records inventory information in "want Book" for wholesale orders.
2. Maintains word areas in a neat and orderly manner; practices departmental infection control policy and procedures applicable to work area.
3. Strives to achieve excellence of service as described in the CARE Commitments.
4. Responds to the following Shore Health System codes: Code Red (in the immediate area), Code Pink (when called), Code D (when called).
5. Will receive and maintain BLS (Basic Life Support) certification: Effective for all technicians by January 31, 2009.
