The Role

Moderna is advancing its mRNA platform to unlock new therapeutic applications and expand its R&D portfolio across multiple disease areas. To maximize impact, the Portfolio & Program Strategy team plays a critical role in ensuring that portfolio investments are strategic, data-driven, and aligned with corporate priorities. This team operates across research, development and commercial functions to provide structured insights and enable executive decision-making.

The Director, Portfolio & Program Strategy, will be responsible for leading portfolio strategy projects and providing strategic investment recommendations. This individual will tackle Moderna’s most complex investment and prioritization questions, integrating scientific, financial, and strategic insights to drive high-impact decisions. As a strategic thought partner, they will ensure that portfolio and program strategies align with Moderna’s broader corporate objectives.

Here’s What You’ll Do

  • Establish structured decision frameworks and processes to enable resource allocation, sequencing, and investment pacing based on real-time data and evolving priorities.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams (research, clinical development, commercial, manufacturing) to drive alignment on portfolio priorities, trade-offs, and strategic pivots.
  • Assess the scientific, operational, and commercial impact of portfolio choices, ensuring enterprise-wide coordination while working closely with senior stakeholders.
  • Develop and refine portfolio models that integrate R&D attrition, clinical probability of success, commercial forecasts, and investment pacing to inform decision-making.
  • Deliver clear, data-driven insights and strategic recommendations to executive leadership, translating complex trade-offs into actionable, high-impact moves.
  • Continuously evaluate market, competitive, and internal pipeline dynamics to refine Moderna’s investment strategy.

Here’s What You’ll Need (Minimum Qualifications)

  • 8+ years of experience in strategy, corporate development, or portfolio management within a clinical- or commercial-stage pharmaceutical/biotech company, or equivalent experience in management consulting (life-sciences focused), investment banking (healthcare sector) or venture capital (biotech/life sciences).
  • Ability to perform and synthesize in-depth analyses of indications, products, and therapeutic areas, integrating findings into actionable recommendations.
  • Advanced degree preferred (PhD, MD, PharmD, or MBA), with a strong understanding of drug development, R&D strategy, and value creation in biopharma.
  • Demonstrated ability to work cross-functionally across research, clinical development, commercial, and manufacturing teams.
  • Experience in portfolio modeling, scenario planning, or strategic investment frameworks.

  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills to deliver a compelling narrative/message to senior stakeholders in the organization
  • Experience in biopharma investment analysis, forecasting, or corporate strategy at a global level.
  • Ability to translate scientific and financial trade-offs into executive-level decision-making insights.
  • Familiarity with clinical trial design and regulatory pathways to understand pipeline development and market entry challenges.
